The recent Nintendo Direct came and went and while we didn’t get Mario Kart 9 like many fans anticipated, Nintendo did reveal that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would receive a massive amount of new DLC in the Booster Course Pass. However, a leaker now alleges that Mario Kart 9 is still in active development at Nintendo.
According to Nintendo leaker Zippo, who is mostly seen in the community as reputable, Nintendo’s core studio is still working on Mario Kart 9 while Bandai Namco works on the upcoming Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC.

Zippo recently posted a blog post detailing their reaction to the latest Nintendo Direct, but reiterated that they believe Nintendo is still working on Mario Kart 9 despite the Booster Course Pass announcement:
“I heard shortly after the Direct that this DLC is being made entirely by Bandai Namco, EPD has little to no involvement with this, as work continues on the next Mario Kart.”
As with all rumours, take this with a grain of salt, but Zippo has been fairly accurate in their past leaks to put some faith in this rumour.
Nintendo has been quiet about any potential projects currently in development at their core studios besides already announced games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and more. It’s no surprise that they’re also tight-lipped about a potential new Mario Kart game.
Fans have been asking for Mario Kart 9 for several years now. Mario Kart 8 originally launched on the Nintendo Wii U in 2014, but received an enhanced Nintendo Switch version in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2017. It was rather strange, then, that Nintendo announced new DLC for what is essentially an eight year old game.
However, if these rumours by Zippo are true, then we can expect Nintendo to blow the lid open on Mario Kart 9 following the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s Booster Course Pass over the next few months.
