PlayStation State of Play Returns This Week Focused on Final Fantasy XVI

Sony has announced the date for its next PlayStation State of Play showcase which will be entirely dedicated to the upcoming Square Enix action-RPG, Final Fantasy XVI. Fans can tune into over 20 minutes of new gameplay for the anticipated game this Thursday, 13 April.

Final Fantasy XVI is the sixteenth mainline installment in the long-running Final Fantasy series by Square Enix. Like its predecessor, the combat will be overhauled and feature more real-time action than turn-based. Instead of having a traditional open-world, the game will allow players to explore massive zones. Square Enix explained this was done to always put the focus on the story and not distract players with too many open-world side activities.

The story of Final Fantasy XVI is set in the fantasy realm of Valisthea, a sprawling continent with various warring kingdoms all fighting for control of towering, mountain-sized objects called Mothercrystals. Players assume the role of Clive Rosfield, a special individual called a Dominant who has the ability to harness the power of Eikons, which are basically summons.

The description of the story provided on the game’s official website reads:

“For centuries, people have flocked to her Mothercrystals to partake of their blessing—the abundant aether that fuels the magicks they rely upon in their everyday lives. As the aether begins to fade and the lifeless deadlands spread ever further, so too does the struggle for possession of the final flickers of the Mothers’ light grow ever more fierce. Yet amidst the gathering storm, there are those who believe that the legacy of the crystals has shaped mankind’s destiny for long enough.”

Square Enix has already delivered several trailers showcasing Final Fantasy XVI‘s world, exploration and combat but it looks like we’ll be getting a much deeper dive into the game with this new PlayStation State of Play event. The showcase is set to air on Thursday, 13 April at 12pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm GMT / 11pm CEST or 11pm CAT for South Africans.

Final Fantasy XVI launches on 22 June 2023 exclusively for PS5.
