Developer Naughty Dog recently released a brand-new trailer for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, briefly introducing fans to the game’s included “roguelike survival” mode, titled No Return. Players will have a variety of recognisable characters to choose from including Jesse, Lev, Dina and Manny before beginning their run. Acquiring and upgrading various weaponry and utilising mods (which appear to be randomised) will allow you to prepare for the increasingly challenging enemies the game throws at you.
Of course, being a roguelike mode and all, death is both inevitable and expected, and the trailer makes sure to emphasise this with the words “Try Again” popping up towards the ending. Some of the maps expected to make an appearance in-game include a hardware store, forest, hospital (and basement) and State Street.
In the initial announcement post for the title, Jonathon Dornbush of Naughty Dog said that No Return is “designed to let players prove their mettle in randomized encounters and experience The Last of Us Part II’s combat in a fresh experience,” and confirmed the presence of “various stealth and combat encounters that will pit you against a range of enemies, with unique twists that can add new, unexpected factors to any given encounter.”
The remaster will additionally feature the ability for players to share their best time for completing each stage via a speedrun mode, a guitar free play mode and access to incomplete levels with accompanying developer commentary (also for story cutscenes).
In terms of visuals, both the expected fidelity mode and performance mode options will be on offer. Fidelity mode supports native 4k output, with performance mode instead featuring a resolution of 1440p upscaled to 4k.
Announced last month and originally released back in 2020 to both critical acclaim and divisive fan opinions, The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be available on 19 January 2024 for PS5.
