Elden Ring Expansion ‘Shadow of the Erdtree’ Officially Announced

After months of speculation and rumours, developer From Software has officially announced a major expansion for Elden Ring titled Shadow of the Erdtree. The news was shared on the official Elden Ring social media channels confirming that the expansion is currently in development but stopped short of mentioning any details or a release date.

Along with the exciting news, From Software also shared the first promotional image for Elden Ring‘s Shadow of the Erdtree. The image shows the landscape of The Lands Between in ruin with what appears to be the massive Erdtree decaying. A blonde figure on a steed can also be seen in the spooky fields below, though it’s unclear who this person is.

The title Shadow of the Erdtree might imply that we’ll be learning more about the Erdtree, the enormous tree at the heart of The Lands Between which connects the various regions. The dead tree shown in the image could also suggest that it will not be a prequel DLC as some suspected but could take place after the events of the main story following (spoilers ahead) Melina setting the Erdtree on fire.

The announcement for Shadow of the Erdtree reads:

“Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development. We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between.”

Many fans suspected that an expansion for Elden Ring would be announced fairly soon. The reveal arrives a year after the base game’s release which is the tradition for most expansions in From Software’s history. Now that the announcement has been made, we can hopefully look forward to a big reveal very soon.

Elden Ring is currently available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
