Back in 2022, A Song of Ice & Fire creator George R.R. Martin confirmed that a spin-off of Game of Thrones was in the works, revolving around Jon Snow and his journey after the events of the story. Actor Kit Harington and his team were put in charge of developing the series, though a couple of years later, the spin-off series has been put “on the shelf.”
Speaking to Screen Rant while promoting his new movie Blood for Dust, Kit Harington spoke a bit about the Jon Snow spin-off series. According to the actor, the spin-off is now “on the shelf” after his team struggled to “find the right story” to tell following the events of Game of Thrones. For those that have seen the finale, Jon Snow returned to the wildlings beyond the walls. The show might’ve picked up there, showing Snow’s adventure after his brother Bran Stark’s ascension to the Iron Throne.
Harington responded to the Jon Snow spin-off being shelved, stating:
“Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
The legacy of Game of Thrones lives on in the popular spin-off series House of the Dragon, which recounts the pivotal years of House Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros before the events of the main story. A second season is currently in development.
Back in April 2023, Variety reported that another Game of Thrones prequel was in early development at HBO. The show will reportedly follow Aegon I and his conquest over six of the seven Westeros kingdoms. This spin-off hasn’t been confirmed by HBO yet and might be on ice as well.
