Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest 2023 Dated for June

Geoff Keighley sure knows how to pick the timing of his announcements because in light of E3 losing Ubisoft, Tencent and Sega, he has now revealed a date for Summer Game Fest 2023. The annual event will return this year and take place around the same time as E3, promising world premieres, reveals, updates and more.

Summer Game Fest 2023 will take place live at the YouTube Theater on Thursday, 8 June. “The video game industry comes together this June, kicking off live from YouTube Theatre on Thursday, June 8, 2023,” reads the official announcement. “Production is ramping up on our biggest Summer Game Fest ever.”

For those that haven’t kept up, every year for the past few years, Geoff Keighley has hosted a live event called Summer Game Fest that was originally meant to fill the empty annual block of game announcements left by E3 during the pandemic. The event became popular enough to gain traction and hosted plenty of big reveals in the past, including the anticipated first look at gameplay for Elden Ring and its release date back in 2021.

Summer Game Fest 2023 promises to continue the tradition of big reveals from a number of developers and publishers across the industry. To address the elephant in the room, the event’s clash with E3 around the same time in June could mean that some gaming companies might opt to showcase its new titles at Keighley’s event as opposed to E3 or vice versa. It will be interesting to see how that unfolds.

Unfortunately, E3 is in a bit of a rough spot at the moment. Having lost a few big publishers recently, rumours are circulating that organiser ReedPop could choose to cancel the event altogether and make that announcement this week. With publishers also choosing to host dedicated showcases like Ubisoft Forward, Capcom Spotlight or Square Enix Presents, players are beginning to question how much longer E3 will be around.
