Kingdom Hearts Adaptation Reportedly in The Works

An adaptation of Kingdom Hearts, the popular action RPG franchise from Square Enix, is reportedly in the works though it’s unclear if it’s a movie or television series yet. We first heard rumblings of a potential Kingdom Hearts adaptation back in 2020 though there’s been no mention of it until now, as many fans assumed that it had been scrapped.

According to regular movie leaker DanielRPK, the project is alive and well. The leaker claims that an adaptation of Kingdom Hearts is currently in the works at Disney but sources couldn’t confirm if it was a movie or television series. That’s about all the information we have regarding the project right now. It’s also unknown if it will be live-action or adapted using CGI – the latter seems to be the most popular consensus as the world and characters of Kingdom Hearts, including its Disney icons, lend themselves better to animated format.

For those unaware, Kingdom Hearts is a series of video games developed and published by Final Fantasy company Square Enix. The premise incorporates several Disney figures like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Winnie The Pooh, Hercules and many other Disney intellectual properties paired with Square Enix’s original character designs (and some crossovers with the Final Fantasy universe).

Kingdom Hearts has developed a large fanbase over the years, though newcomers argue that it’s quite a complicated story to understand. Hopefully an adaptation will better explain some of the franchise’s more confusing elements.

In related news, Square Enix is currently working on Kingdom Hearts IV, which doesn’t have a release date as of writing. Previous details reveal that development will be shifting from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. The publisher also claims that it will be the beginning of an “epic new storyline” for the franchise, which some have taken to mean it’s going to feature new characters. We also know that it will include Star Wars in some capacity.
