Minecraft Movie Has Officially Wrapped Filming

The upcoming Minecraft movie starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa has officially wrapped filming. A photo with the cast and crew was recently uploaded to Momoa’s Instagram account confirming the news. According to the star, most of the movie was shot in New Zealand where it recently ended its principal photography and filming.

The Minecraft movie started filming back in January and last for around three months. The live-action outing is directed by Jared Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre with a screenplay co-written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. Alongside Jason Momoa, the movie stars Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement.

The caption under Momoa’s post reads:

“Minecraft we are wrapping! All my aloha to my crew and cast. Unbelievable movie experience truly one of the greatest times of my life. Too many laughs. I love this country. Aotearoa New Zealand you are magical. Mahalo for letting me film here.”

Plot details about the Minecraft movie are mostly unknown, though it stars Myers as a young girl who must rally a group of adventurers to set out into the blocky Overworld and stop the destructive reign of the Ender Dragon. The brief synopsis reads, “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”

It’s yet to be seen if the movie will be fully adapted with CGI or use a blend of real-life with the technology. Black is set to play Steve, the protagonist of the Minecraft universe, though we’re left wondering what part Momoa has to play in this. Our bet is he will play the Ender Dragon or a creeper. Either one sounds awesome.

The Minecraft movie arrives in cinemas on 4 April 2025.
