EA’s Iron Man and Black Panther Games Will Be Open World – Report

Last year, EA Games announced that it’s working on two Marvel projects: Iron Man at Dead Space remake developer Motive Studios and Black Panther from a newly formed studio called Cliffhanger Games. Both games will be single-player titles, according to the publisher, though new job listings reveal that they will feature open world settings too.

Yesterday, a job listing was posted by Cliffhanger Games seeking a Principal Sandbox Designer. The job description mentions “open world” and “sandbox” multiple times, suggesting that Black Panther will feature an open world Wakanda for players to explore. EA Games hasn’t outright confirmed this yet, though given the trend of adopting open worlds for high-profile superhero games (see the Batman Arkham trilogy and Insomniac’s Spider-Man games), it makes sense to go in this direction.

Earlier today, another job listing was posted by Motive Studios seeking a Senior Technical Artist to work on Iron Man (as reported by Geekinout). The job description here mentions that the role will help “oversee the rendering related aspects of an open world action adventure AAA title”, seemingly confirming that Iron Man will have an open world setting too.

EA closed a deal with Marvel back in November 2022 to make three games based on Marvel properties. Two of them are known to be Iron Man and Black Panther, though the third one remains a bit of a mystery for the time being. Despite the announcements, Motive Studios revealed last year that Iron Man was still in early pre-production, meaning we’re in for a very long wait. It’s unclear how far along Black Panther is in development, though it might be closer to release.

Before Motive picked up the mantle to develop an Iron Man game, Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios was also once working on its own Iron Man title. This project was unfortunately cancelled.
