Nobuo Uematsu Will Compose Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy’s Final Main Song

Nobuo Uematsu is likely the most well-known composer in gaming. He is most famous for composing soundtracks for the first nine Final Fantasy games including Final Fantasy VII, VIII and XI. Nobuo Uematsu has also worked on various other projects outside of Square Enix. He recently composed the soundtrack for Granblue Fantasy Relink alongside Tsutomu Narita.

While the legendary composer worked on the original Final Fantasy VII game, he wasn’t all that involved in the Remake and Rebirth versions. He did work alongside Tetsuya Nomura on the “Hollow” and “No Promises to Keep” theme songs in both games but the rest of the soundtrack wasn’t his work.

Nobuo Uematsu says he’ll return for the final part of the trilogy and work on the game’s main theme song. Speaking to Tetsuya Nomura and game writer Kazushige Nojima during a special Square Enix music interview, Uematsu says that the news isn’t official yet but it “would be my honour”.

Nomura asks Uematsu about his current work across both games saying “Since you worked on the first and second game in the series, it stands to reason that you have to come back for the third. Not that we’ve made it official yet, but I’d like to believe you’re a lock for the next title. You’ll do it, right?

In response, Uematsu says “It’d be my honour.”

Nomura then asks Uematsu if he is up for the challenge given that it will be difficult to surpass the songs he has already created for the current games. Uematsu laughs and says “For starters, I’m going to take a vacation”.

Uematsu recently opened up about composing an entire soundtrack for a whole game again. The music maker said he doesn’t think he’ll compose music for a whole game again.

“You would have to give it full throttle for two or three years. And I don’t think I have the physical and mental strength to do it anymore. Of course, it’s great to see new people giving this series their all and making great games, but I was happy to get back in the saddle and contribute again. In 10, 20 years, when it’s my time to go, I’ll look back on this moment with tears in my eyes.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available for PS5. Catch up on the full interview below.
