Oppenheimer Gets IMAX Release in South Africa – Bookings Open 17 July

South African cinema chain Ster-Kinekor has confirmed that IMAX bookings for the upcoming biopic thriller, Oppenheimer, from The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan will open on Monday, 17 July 2023. Audiences in South Africa were left wondering when IMAX tickets would be available for the anticipated movie – especially since it wrestles for box office domination with Barbie on the same day of release – but it looks like we finally have confirmation.

Speaking on social media, Ster-Kinekor confirmed that Oppenheimer will release in IMAX format in South Africa after a few weeks of confusion where the movie was only listed for a Nouveau showing on its official website. The website will be updated on 17 July to show pre-bookings for those who want to watch the movie in IMAX, which releases in cinemas nationwide on 21 July.

Oppenheimer tells the true life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project during World War II to develop the first atomic bomb. The movie will document the creation of the bomb, its first test called the Trinity test which was conducted in the deserts of New Mexico and the political strife of Oppenheimer’s personal life. Christopher Nolan, best known for directing Inception, The Dark Knight and Interstellar, will direct Oppenheimer.

If you’re more inclined to see a brighter movie, Ster-Kinekor currently has bookings open for Barbie, which releases on 21 July as well. The Barbie movie will star Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell and Emma Mackey.

Oppenheimer stars an impressive cast consisting of Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid and Jason Clarke, among many others.
