Sony Reverses Helldivers 2 PSN Requirement For PC Players

Last week, Sony announced that Helldivers 2 players on PC would soon be required to link their Steam account to a PSN account, regardless of if the player had an existing one or not. After the game was unceremoniously pulled from 177 countries in the wake of the stringent requirement, Sony has now reversed its decision to go ahead with the PSN account linking requirement as it will no longer move forward.

Sony released a statement on its official PlayStation Twitter/X account addressing the controversy surrounding Helldivers 2 PC players being forced to link a PSN account at a certain date in order to continue playing the game. Problems arose when players spoke out stating that not only did some have to create PSN accounts from scratch but PSN generally wasn’t available in many countries. This led to the game suddenly being delisted in 177 countries, kicking up massive backlash from the community.

Sony has heard the feedback and will reverse the decision to move forward with PSN account linking being a requirement for PC players.

Helldivers fans, we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update,” said Sony. “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.”

Unfortunately, a lot of damage has already been done in the wake of this announcement. Over on Steam, Helldivers 2 is currently sitting with Mostly Negative reviews from over 270,000 angered players, though the discourse could change in the coming weeks. Regardless, it left quite a damning stain on the game and, according to many, it’s one that it didn’t deserve.
