DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn has shared the first look at actor David Corenswet donning the new Superman suit. The image was shared to Gunn’s social media accounts, showing the iconic superhero pulling up his boots as a mysterious villain seemingly wreaks havoc in the skies behind him.
David Corenswet was cast as Clark Kent/Superman after picking up the mantle from former Superman star Henry Cavill. Yesterday, Gunn shared the first look at his upcoming Superman movie, which will officially kick off the revamped DC cinematic universe. The image shows Corenswet wearing a new suit that has made some modifications to Cavill’s outfit. This includes his comic book-accurate red undies which were absent from Cavill’s suit design.
In the background of the image, we can see a giant glowing ball firing off some kind of purple laser. Fan theories ran wild with who this potential threat could be, though the popular consensus is this is likely Brainiac, a recurring villain from Superman’s rogues gallery. The part of Lex Luthor will be played by Nicholas Hoult so there’s a chance that Gunn is keeping a possible second villain a secret – one that will be able to challenge Superman physically.

Corenswet will have big boots to fill after Henry Cavill delivered arguably the best Superman in decades. As far as we know, Gunn’s Superman movie will fully reboot the franchise and set in motion the rest of the new DC cinematic universe to stand toe-to-toe with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga will remain in its own standalone universe.
Superman is set to release on 11 July 2025 and stars David Corenswet alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.
