Earlier this year Remedy Entertainment commented on the financial success of Alan Wake 2. However, while the game boasted a number of sales across the globe, the title had yet to make a profit for the studio. In the latest financial figures, Remedy has once again confirmed that Alan Wake 2 hasn’t recouped the costs used to develop the game.
In a statement, Remedy says that Alan Wake 2 has managed to surpass 1.3 million copies in sales. This figure was hit during Q1 of 2024. The studio confirmed that these sales have managed to recoup “a significant part of the development and marketing expenses” but not the entirety of those expenses.
Alan Wake 2 has gone on to become the fastest-selling Remedy game to date but it seems the development of the game cost much more than expected.
Keep in mind that Alan Wake 2’s sales could have been better. The game didn’t launch on Steam at all and also didn’t have a physical release. Two major factors which could have helped contribute to the game’s success. The Epic Game Store exclusivity is likely going to last until later this year. Epic helped develop Alan Wake 2 using Unreal Engine 5.1. As a result, Remedy signed exclusive launch rights to its storefront.
Remedy is banking on the success of its other upcoming titles to help even the playing field. The latest financial statement included updates to other projects including Condor, Control 2 and the Max Payne remakes.
The studio says Condor is in the “final development stage before a game is launched. We know Condor is a live-service multiplayer game so it will be interesting to see how it survives in the modern game world.
Control 2 will progress to the “production readiness stage” later this year. As for the Max Payne remakes, they will enter “full production later in 2024” according to Remedy.
