Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Might Not Have Local Co-Op

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, the upcoming fighting game from Bandai Namco and based on the works of the late Akira Toriyama, recently received a new gameplay trailer showing its similarities to the popular Budokai Tenkaichi series. However, a new report claims that Sparking Zero will not feature local co-op – a feature that has been in the franchise for decades.

The rumour originates from a recent Reddit post which says that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero producer Jun Furutani reportedly revealed that the upcoming fighter will not feature local split-screen co-op due to complications between Sony and Microsoft. According to the report, the studio is trying to find a solution but for now, the game will apparently launch without local co-op. There’s a chance that it could be implemented at a later stage as part of an update.

Older Budokai Tenkaichi games featured local co-op which has become a staple in the series since then, allowing two players to duke it out on the couch with split-screen gameplay. Sadly, Sparking Zero might not have this feature (at least not on launch day). Hopefully Bandai Namco can issue an official statement regarding this exclusion soon and offer some clarity as to its future plans to possibly add it down the line.

The same post also mentions that Dragon Ball GT characters will be included in the game, though it’s unsure if it will be part of the base roster or appear separately as DLC. Outfits will also deteriorate during fights, with battles designed to be longer than older titles.

Last week, Bandai Namco held a gameplay presentation for Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero which showed off key battles, transformations and more. It’s labelled as part of the Budokai Tenkaichi series so fans know exactly what to expect going in.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. No release date has been announced yet. Watch the gameplay presentation below:
