Death Stranding 10 Million Players Kojima Productions

Live-Action Death Stranding Movie in Development at A24

A24, the entertainment production company behind titles such as Hereditary, Midsommar, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Talk to Me has officially revealed their partnership with legendary video game designer Hideo Kojima and his studio, Kojima Productions. The two entities are working hand-in-hand on the creation of a cinematic live-action adaptation of Kojima’s 2019 video game, Death Stranding.

Death Stranding originally launched on PS4 in 2019 and told the story of Sam Porter Bridges (played by Norman Reedus), a courier who is tasked with protecting a mysterious baby from the dangers of a post-apocalyptic world where society has been fractured. Strange occurrences such as Timefall and the presence of BTs, beings created from the dead via necrosis, stand in his way.

In a statement published on the Kojima Productions site, Kojima said of A24’s involvement with the film:

“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a ‘Death Stranding’ movie together.”

As for what fans can expect from the movie, Kojima explained:

“There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a ‘Death Stranding’ universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

The initial movie announcement came at the end of last year, in December, shortly after a trailer for Death Stranding 2 was shown off at The Game Awards. It was also confirmed at the time that all funding for the movie was being provided by Hammerstone Studios, though it’s anyone’s guess as to whether the situation has changed at all since then.

To celebrate the occasion, A24 has added a $40 shirt to their online store featuring the company’s logo displayed in the instantly recognisable Death Stranding font style. The product description reads (and is echoed on the official X/Twitter post): “It’s official: we’ve partnered with Kojima Productions on the live-action feature film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game, Death Stranding.” Yes, it’s already out of stock at the time of writing. It’s a shame as well because the site actually ships goods to South Africa – prohibitively expensive as the final total payment may be.
