New God of War Ragnarok Combat Details Revealed

God of War Ragnarok remains one of the most anticipated releases of 2022. The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s God of War is set to arrive this November, but it looks like developer Sony Santa Monica Studio is slowly ramping up the game’s marketing. Some new details highlight the game’s combat, which involves Kratos “playing with his food.”

The information arrives via exclusive coverage by Game Informer. God of War Ragnarok‘s lead combat designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh spoke in some detail about the game’s combat systems, pushing the combat from the previous game further and the expanded Weapon Signature Moves.

Sheth talked about how the studio revamped Ragnarok‘s combat, stating:

“Kratos plays with his food. We tried to create systems you want to engage with that are fun, very playful, lots of different routes. And when we looked at the combat in the last game, we were like, ‘We can push this further; we can find new toys and ways of playing with enemies and strategies.’ That’s been the guiding principle more than anything else.”

Weapon Signature Moves have been added as an expansion of the triangle button. In the previous game, this was just used to recall Kratos’ Leviathan Axe. However, it’s now being expanded in Ragnarok. Kratos can now infuse his axe for powerful elemental attacks. For example, Frost Awaken freezes enemies while the Blades of Chaos use Whiplash to incinerate them.

Shields will also be getting a combat overhaul as a viable tool in battle. The Dauntless Shield allows Kratos to unleash a devastating smash attack after parrying at the last second, while the Stonewall Shield removes parrying but adds the ability to absorb attacks and, when fully charged, pound the ground for a powerful AoE follow-up.

Lastly, difficulty was briefly touched upon. On higher difficulties, enemies will have heightened aggression. Enemies will be respawned in older locations and there will be challenging side content for players to discover (which we assume is akin to the Valkyries in God of War).

God of War Ragnarok releases on 9 November 2022 for PS4 and PS5. Game Informer revealed that four minutes of new gameplay is scheduled to arrive sometime this September.
