Resident Evil 2 Remake is The Highest-Selling Game in The Series

Capcom has revealed that the Resident Evil 2 remake is now the highest-selling game in the series, recently passing 12.6 million copies sold since its launch in January 2019. This puts it closely behind Monster Hunter Rise‘s 13.2 million and Monster Hunter World‘s 19 million as the third best-selling Capcom game of all time.

The Resident Evil 2 remake launched back in early 2019 as a full reimagining of the classic 1998 PS1 game, complete with overhauled visuals, combat, level design, story and gameplay elements that shifted the perspective from its trademark fixed-camera to an over-the-shoulder third-person view, similar to the style popularised by Resident Evil 4. A sequel, the Resident Evil 3 remake, was released in 2020 and kept most of these gameplay elements and overhauls.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the Resident Evil 2 remake sold this well. Along with being a long-awaited remake from the community, it’s also frequently discounted in sales across all platforms, making it an easy pick-up for most players – even those unfamiliar with the series who use it as a perfect entry point.

The description for the Resident Evil 2 remake reads:

“The genre-defining masterpiece Resident Evil 2 returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up for a deeper narrative experience. Using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine, Resident Evil 2 offers a fresh take on the classic survival horror saga with breathtakingly realistic visuals, heart-pounding immersive audio, a new over-the-shoulder camera, and modernized controls on top of gameplay modes from the original game.”

In other news, a previous report claimed that Resident Evil 9 (which is apparently going under the codename “Apocalypse”) will release in 2025. This lines up with Capcom’s current schedule of seemingly releasing a new Resident Evil game every second year, whether it be a new mainline entry or a remake. Capcom released the remake of Resident Evil 4 earlier this year to glowing reviews and its fair share of successful sales too.

Resident Evil 2 is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC with a free upgrade available to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
