Saints Row Overhaul Arrives Today and Maybe it is Time For a Second Chance

Today is a big day for Saints Row as it gets its new Sunshine Springs Update. The game was released back in August last year to some mixed reviews. Saints Row was criticised for its mediocre story and buggy gameplay. However, developer Volition promised to fix it and this update is seen as its new lease on life.

Not only will the Sunshine Springs Update add the first DLC pack called The Heist and The Hazardous to the game, but the quality of life improvements aim to make the game much better too.

Volition has completely overhauled the combat in Saints Row. The developer says it feels smoother and “more badass” than ever before. Not sure what “badass” means here but the dev blog details reduced health, reduced the frequency of enemy dodges and much more.

A lot of the player weapons and abilities have also been buffed meaning you’ll now feel more powerful. The team have also reduced gun spread and added realistic recoil to shooting so it relies on your being skilled with a gun.

The general experience of Saints Row is also getting some polish. The weather system will have new Overast and Cloudy states, you can now turn off all health bars, and Saints will now gather around the world to help the player out. There’s a lot to unpack in the update.

Volition has also focused on fixing mostly every issue and bug in each mission in the game. The patch notes detail a full list of tweaks for all these missions. There’s also a substantial list of changes for co-op, the garage and general exploration.

Saints Row Content Roadmap

Of course, there’s also The Heist and The Hazardous DLC which adds new story content to the game. There are also new weapons to unlock, vehicles to obtain and more. If you don’t own the DLC, you can still explore the new district called Sunshine Springs. You just won’t be able to play any of the content.

I do have respect for Volition and the effort the team has put into Saints Row to fix the game’s issues. I might actually redownload this and jump into the DLC. With that being said, it would be nice to see the game on sale for the release of this update. Perhaps it would get more people to consider it.

You can read the full patch notes for the update and expansion here. Volition will also release the expansion launch trailer later today at 5 pm CAT. You can watch it below.
