Marvel Studios is apparently making some big changes to its upcoming lineup of directors for future MCU projects. After former director Destin Daniel Cretton left Avengers: The Kang Dynasty earlier this month, the company has been shuffling to find a new director to lead the charge for its tentpole Avengers movies. According to a new rumour, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is a top contender to direct both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
The report originates from leaker DanielRPK who has been mostly accurate in their Marvel-related leaks. The leaker claims that Sam Raimi is high up on Marvel Studios’ priority list to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. While Raimi was previously rumoured to direct the latter, this is the first time that we’re hearing about him potentially taking on both movies back-to-back.
Raimi has a good reputation with comic book fans, having previously directed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy as well as 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So it makes sense that Marvel would tap him to direct its two biggest upcoming blockbusters.
Meanwhile, Loki and Rick and Morty writer Michael Waldron was officially announced as the screenwriter for The Kang Dynasty and it’s believed that he’ll also be writing Secret Wars, though that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
In other MCU news, Javier Bardem is reportedly being eyed to play Galactus in the MCU’s upcoming Fantastic Four movie (and potentially in Secret Wars).
Marvel and Disney recently reshuffled the cinematic universe’s release schedule, delaying several anticipated movies into 2025 and beyond. However, Deadpool 3 now remains the only MCU movie scheduled to release in 2024. Filming recently resumed following the actors and writers strikes in Hollywood. Lead actor Ryan Reynolds also addressed recent rumours that singer Taylor Swift might have a cameo in the movie.
