Sony Announces PS5 Slim With Detachable Ultra HD Blu-Ray Drive

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Slim. The new console isn’t called the “Slim” but more a “new look” for the console. Sony says in terms of power and performance, the console is identical to the current models on the market. However, the design has changed quite dramatically in certain places.

The new PS5 has shrunk by 30% and is 18% lighter than the Digital Edition and 24% lighter than the previous disc model. The console now features four detachable cover panels. Both upper panels feature a glossy finish and the bottom panels are matte.

The console now also includes an attachable Ultra HD Blu-Ray Drive. This drive is attached to the console by removing the bottom side cover and slotting the unit onto the console. You’ll then attach the disc console cover onto the console essentially turning your PS5 from a Digital Edition to a disc model unit.

Sony says both versions of the console will be available at launch this November when it rolls out in the US and other regions. If you purchase the Digital Edition, you can always pick up the Ultra HD Blu-Ray Drive attachment at a later date. The disc drive will retail for $79.

The new PS5 will also come with various colour options for console covers. This includes the recently announced Deep Earth Collection. Sony says customers can pick these up sometime in early 2024.

The new PS5 Slim also doesn’t come with a verticle stand. Sony will sell these stands separately too for $29. Out of the box, you can only lay your console flat on its side. It will stand up using a kickstand included in the box.

PS5 Slim

Sony says the new PS5 Slim will be the only version of the console you can purchase once the current stock on the market sells out. The company will launch the new model in the US, Europe, the UK and Japan next month followed by other regions at a later date. It will retail for the same price as the current model.

Hopefully with the release of the PS5 Slim model local retailers will start having the PS5 more readily available in stock. I’d assume a good amount of players will trade in there base model PS5 for the Slim making more available for those who don’t already own one.
