Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have made their in-show debut as Joel and Ellie in the first photo for the upcoming HBO The Last of Us adaption. This is the first time we have seen the two characters on the set of the show and wearing their costumes. While we can’t see their faces, so far both characters look quite authentic in comparison to the PlayStation video game series.
The photo doesn’t tell us much but we do see a plane crash in the distance. The plane also seems to have crashed a while back as the grass around it isn’t burnt or damaged. Perhaps Ellie and Joel are on a scouting mission and this particular episode sees them explore the crash site for supplies.

The Last of Us series is based on the critically acclaimed video game franchise from Naughty Dog. But you already knew this. The show takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old Ellie out of a quarantine zone. The fall of humanity was caused by an outbreak of the Cordyceps Virus that has turned people into deadly zombie-like fungal creatures.
Ellie, for some reason, is immune to this virus and unlike others who breathe in the spores and transform into mushrooms, she doesn’t. Joel now takes it upon himself to try and protect Ellie who represents the last hope of humanity.
When I first saw them on set in full costume, I was like: “Hooooooly shit! It’s Joel & Ellie! 😭!”
