Five Nights at Freddy’s Remake Has Quietly Been in the Works for Two Years

A Five Nights at Freddy’s remake has quietly been in development for the past two years. Titled Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus, the remake being made by Phisnom aims to steer the series back in a more horror-focused direction. While not developed by current mainline series developer Steel Wool Studios, it’s endorsed by the franchise’s creator Scott Cawthon.

Technically, Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus is fan-made if not for its endorsement by Cawthon himself for The Fazbear Fanverse Initiative. The initiative was created by Cawthon to fund and market fan-made games related to the horror series, including Five Nights at Candy’s and The Joy of Creation.

Because of the initiative, the FNAF community has debated whether or not these games are considered canon to the timeline. However, Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus is a rather unique case as it’s not a spin-off but rather a ground-up remake of an already existing game in the series.

Since its announcement in early 2020, Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus has received plenty of cryptic marketing and trailers offering fans a look at the remake’s ambitious decision to up the horror factor of the original.

The remake will still retain the original game’s point-and-click gameplay, but the visuals will be enhanced and the staple animatronics will now be animated to some degree. However, there will be a stronger focus on horror in the remake, building tension through a more palpable atmosphere and jump scares.

While the FNAF community is already fully aware of the project and have been following it closely, most mainstream audiences aren’t. The game doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but many speculate it will arrive sometime this year.

Following the release of last year’s divisive Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach which tipped the series away from horror, Phisnom’s remake claims to be a return to form for the series, and with the endorsement of Cawthon himself, could be the revival the series desperately needs.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus is currently in development for PC.
