David is best known for his ongoing role as Earl Godwin in Vikings: Valhalla. The show debuted back in 2022 and is the follow-up to the popular Vikings TV series. But David Oakes has also appeared in a number of TV shows and movies throughout his career.  Back in 2010, Oakes starred in The Pillars of the Earth mini-series as William Hamleigh.

He then took up the role of George Duke of Clarence in The White Queen. Given the star’s British origins, David Oakes continued to appear in multiple UK TV series following The White Queen. He made an appearance in an episode of Endeavour and appeared in a handful of episodes of The Living and the Dead.

David Oakes has a strong background in theatre. He started out his career at Shakespeare’s Globe which is a playhouse in London. Here, he performed readings as part of the Read Not Dead initiative.

Much of Oake’s past roles have been centred around historical movies and TV shows. The Pillars of The Earth, The Borgias, The White Queen, Victoria and most recently, Vikings: Valhalla all see David star in content set way back in time. The actor has proven to be the perfect placement for this content thanks to his English background and theatrical experience.

Oakes has also trained fluently in a number of musical instruments including the clarinet. He can also sing. In his free time, Oakes is dedicated to movements aimed at preserving nature and especially, trees. He is the presenter of a historical podcast Trees a Crowd. He has also dedicated a lot of his time to other trusts including Greenpeace, National Trust and the Woodland Trust.
