Sonic Frontiers 2 Reportedly in Development

Sonic Frontiers 2, a sequel to 2022’s open world Sonic game from Sega and Sonic Team, is reportedly in development. Frontiers launched to decent reviews, though some criticised its open world design and bland story. According to a trustworthy source, it seems like Sega is moving ahead with the sequel and hopefully some lessons were learned from the first attempt.

The rumour originates from DanielRPK who has a decent track record of accurate leaks in the industry. According to the leaker, Sega is working on Sonic Frontiers 2, though there’s a good chance the subtitle will be something different. Reliable leaker Midori, who accurately reports on insider information from Atlus and Sega, corroborated the claim, adding more validity to it. “The title is a sequel to Frontiers in gameplay style,” said Midori. “But the name might change. Frontiers was Rangers until it was announced.”

Despite being Sonic Team’s first real attempt at an open world entry in the franchise, Sonic Frontiers was received quite positively by the fanbase. Of course, there’s still some room for improvement which a sequel can deliver on.

The official description of Sonic Frontiers reads:

“Worlds are colliding in Sonic the Hedgehog’s newest high-speed adventure! In search of the missing Chaos emeralds, Sonic becomes stranded on an ancient island teeming with unusual creatures. Battle hordes of powerful enemies as you explore a breathtaking world of action, adventure, and mystery. Accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity, open-zone platforming freedom as you race across the five massive Starfall Islands. Jump into adventure, wield the power of the Ancients, and fight to stop these new mysterious foes. Welcome to the evolution of Sonic games!”

Sega is gearing up for Sonic X Shadow Generations, the next game in the Sonic franchise which is scheduled to release in fall 2024 for consoles and PC.
